I love to journal as I find it so amazing for getting everything out that is within my head. However, I've noticed that using journal prompts targeted for specific things has helped me so much with discovering parts of myself that I never knew about.
Why Journal Prompts Work
Journal prompts are remarkably effective tools for self-reflection, personal growth, and self-discovery. They serve as catalysts, guiding us to explore our thoughts, emotions, and experiences more deeply.
By posing thought-provoking questions or topics, journal prompts encourage us to dive beneath the surface of our consciousness, unearthing insights, desires, and realizations that may otherwise remain hidden.
Shadow Work Prompts to Try
- What emotion do I most try to avoid feeling? Write about why this emotion feels threatening and where that fear might originate.
- What do I judge most harshly in others? This often reflects something we haven't accepted within ourselves.
- What story from my childhood do I keep telling myself? How has this narrative shaped the way I show up today?
- When do I people-please instead of speaking my truth? What am I afraid will happen if I'm fully honest?
- What would I do differently if I wasn't afraid of judgment? Let yourself dream without limits.
- Where in my life am I seeking external validation? What would it look like to give that validation to myself?
Making It a Practice
Commit to sitting with these prompts without judgment. There are no right or wrong answers — only honest ones. The magic happens in the space between the question and your willingness to truly hear yourself.
